Bear is a gorgeous lynx-like polydactyl King who has even been featured on calendars. He looks rugged but he prefers naps, churu treats, and soft pillows.
The Maine Coon
Tall Trees and Big Cats!
Our kitties loooove living in the forest and so do we! Maine Coons are pretty rugged cats, oftentimes with thick dense coats especially in the winter, lynx ear tufts, and many even have polydactyl paws which means they have extra toes. This characteristic helps them navigate cold or snowy landscapes. They don’t really have to do much of that here because it doesn’t snow in the catio but the extra toes can be super cute!
A Breed Apart
What Makes the Maine Coon Unique?
Maine Coons are not only the largest domestic cat breed, and yes of course they are beautiful and exotic looking, but they are also renowned for their outgoing, dog-like personalities. They are cuddly, affectionate, intelligent, love to follow you around, and overall they are just fantastic companions. This is not a cat you can leave alone and forget about. If you’re “not a cat person”, yes you are, you just haven’t met a Maine Coon yet.
Larger Than Life
How Big are Maine Coons?
Male Maine Coons frequently tip the scales at 15–25 pounds, with females weighing between 10-18 pounds. Maine Coons are the Great Danes of the cat world and a breeder MUST complete echocardiograms and hip x-rays especially when working with larger lines, because with these sizes comes the extra risk of heart disease and hip dysplasia.
Oftentimes Social Media famous breeders will use certain angles to make their cats look bigger, but don’t be fooled. There is no such thing as a 40 pound Maine Coon. Most of the cats in these photos are around 20 pounds. Of course their fur can definitely add some size as well!
Let's talk FLOOF!
Maine Coons are unique in that they continue to grow and change until they are 4-5 years old. As kittens they usually don't have their trademark manes yet, but the floof usually arrives by the time they are 7 months - 1 year old.
A Breed for Those Who Want Extraordinary
If you’re searching for a cat that embodies the spirit of the wild while maintaining the affectionate charm of a devoted companion, the Maine Coon is in a league of its own. This is not just a pet, it's an experience. A living, breathing work of art that will make you their whole world.
The Gentle Giant with a King’s Heart
Despite their oftentimes grumpy looking faces, Maine Coons are the epitome of affection. They possess a sweet, playful nature, form deep and loyal bonds with their humans, and their intelligence is off the charts. They have a knack for learning tricks, opening doors, and even responding to their names like a dog. Griffin can sit, give high fives, go up on two paws, and turn around all on command.
